Summary

Balm for the soul—Alessandra Olanow offers advice, inspiration, and encouragement for anyone who needs a shoulder to lean on during a difficult time。

“I Know This Too Shall Pass。 (But It Would Be Helpful to Know When)。”

After a series of events left her a divorced single mother questioning herself, her relationships, and basically, everything she thought was true about her “picture-perfect” life, Alessandra Olanow began drawing and posting illustrations on Instagram that reflected her feelings and struggles to right her life。 She chronicled her journey of healing, expressing the shock, delusion, denial, self-pity, and self-doubt she experienced and the self-empathy and forgiveness that ultimately helped her regain a sense of self—but stronger, more fearless, and more hopeful than before。 Her charming illustrations and keen, memorable observations—struck a chord。 Within a year, her audience grew dramatically, from 9,500 to 157,000 followers, including celebrities Katie Couric, Jennifer Garner, Elise Loehnen (chief content officer at Goop), the poet Joao Doederlein, and Joanna Goddard (founder of A Cup of Jo)。

I Used to Have a Plan brings Olanow’s soothing sensibility to a wider audience, featuring new drawings and ideas that touch upon the universal experiences of unexpected change and loss。 Divided into five parts—“I Didn’t See That Coming,” “It’s OK That You’re Not OK,” “Where’d I Go,” “The Only Way Out Is Through,” and “I Like It Here, Can I Stay a While?”—the book beautifully encapsulates the experience of encountering difficulty, processing it and healing from it, and becoming stronger and with a better sense of self。

Full of advice, commiseration, empathy, and wit that is comforting, helpful, direct, and remarkable in its truth, I Used to Have a Plan helps everyone through the painful yet ultimately uplifting process of healing。

I Used to Have a Plan includes 75-100 illustrations。

Very knowledgeable and fantastic book

Claire

Cute drawings, but this felt like scrolling through an Instagram page, not a book。

3。5 🌟 The musings, illustrations, and overall vibe of the book really resonated with me。 It was validating to see some of my mental health struggles reflected by this book and bravely laid bare。That said, it’s a book that winks at deep topics without engaging them in a way that I felt was life-altering。 And that’s ok! It’s short and sweet, and wonderful for a quick read。

Aidu

Short, to the point with beautiful simple illustrations。 Good for gifts。

Daina Chakma

Beautifully drawn, deceptively simple illustrations。 Sparse text that explores coping when life goes off-kilter。

Bookstore read—perfect reminder that detours > plans。

There wasn't very much to it, which was a little disappointing。 I enjoyed the artwork, but I feel like I've seen most of them on the artist's Instagram。 Overall, it's all very vague, which is accessible and easy to be widely read, but I find it a bit boring。 It's still good to flip through and read very quickly if you're interested。 Still very worth it for the art and sketches。 There wasn't very much to it, which was a little disappointing。 I enjoyed the artwork, but I feel like I've seen most of them on the artist's Instagram。 Overall, it's all very vague, which is accessible and easy to be widely read, but I find it a bit boring。 It's still good to flip through and read very quickly if you're interested。 Still very worth it for the art and sketches。 。。。more

I saw this on my tiktok fyp, and it was said that this is one of the books one should read before turning 25。 And yes, I do really like this one

This book would make a ✨fantastic✨ coffee table book。 While reading through it I was imagining it blown up larger and in canvas instead of paper。 Chefs kiss to that thought!!Alas, I’m starting to think that these brief and simplistic poetry/ life-lesson books are not for me。 Okay do think that this would be a great choice for a grieving friend or family member who doesn’t like to read or perhaps is not able to read well。

Claudia

So good life advice via so clever drawing。I can really identify with each image。

Short, sweet, and to the point。 Insight into hard times as a human, figuring out life, knowing you’re not alone, and that other people feel this way, too。 Give her a follow on Instagram, too!

Good book。 A must read。

It was good! A bit depressing, like, life sometimes。。。But, it was also hopeful and I think, like the author says, sometimes all we need is a little bit of hope to keep on going! It was good!

After a tough week, I happened to be in Barnes & Noble with my hubby and teenage daughter。 We all went our separate ways and met back up at the front of the store。 My hands were empty until he held out this powerful little book, and said, "Read it。"The next eight minutes blew me away。。。 that's all it took to move from cover to cover。 The illustrations are spot on。 The words, simple and true and raw。 It's a book that doesn't tell you to do anything, but it does make you feel better knowing that w After a tough week, I happened to be in Barnes & Noble with my hubby and teenage daughter。 We all went our separate ways and met back up at the front of the store。 My hands were empty until he held out this powerful little book, and said, "Read it。"The next eight minutes blew me away。。。 that's all it took to move from cover to cover。 The illustrations are spot on。 The words, simple and true and raw。 It's a book that doesn't tell you to do anything, but it does make you feel better knowing that we all experience pain and grief and disappointment from time to time。My hubby bought the book just three days ago, I've read it twice and shared it with four people so far。 If you need encouragement or a side helping of grace, this book is for you。 。。。more

I saved a few good gems in here, but I honestly got more out of reading Yumi Sakugawa。It is helpful to remember that hope helps。

So refreshing and definitely super relatable to someone like me who is still figuring a lot of things out! As a 28 year old, this books speaks to me so much and hopefully I get to create something like Olanow’s writing! It’s so fun and captivating。

Melissa Somoza

Honest and relatable。 Short and sweet with cute illustrations。 It definitely hit hard and hit home。 Something I plan on picking up again and again to flip to a random page when I’m having a rough day。

As cute as it was i wish there was a little more substance to it

This can be a 3-minute book but every illustration seems to really reflect how many of us felt during the time of uncertainties。 Just realized that how much I have relied on making plans, having my calendar filled up everyday to show how important my life was instead of just living at the present。。。 A good homework reminder。。。Like a review exercise。。。

beautiful, sweet book。 cliche sometimes but comforting nonetheless。
